Monster Madness Grave Danger

A little over a year ago, a zombie-filled hack and slash title hit the 360 under the name Monster Madness: Battle for Suburbia. Monster Madness gave gamers a chance to guide a group of four weapon-totting teens through an infested suburban locale. Unfortunately, the game was given a less-than-enthusiastic greeting and didn't make much of an impact on Microsoft's console. Now, Monster Madness is stumbling back to consoles again in the form of Monster Madness: Grave Danger, a port of the 360 version with several new modes and mini-games to give it an edge over its predecessor. And while Grave Danger is certainly an improvement over Battle for Suburbia, I think it's safe to say that this is still a severely lacking zombie experience.

Grave Danger offers a familiar top-down, hack and slash mechanic where you choose one character out of the four and fight your way through hordes of the undead (and other assorted baddies). Up to three other friends can hop in at any time to join in on the action, which definitely adds to the arcade-like feeling. Grave Danger is a silly game that references a lot of other popular games and films throughout its paper-thin story, but its overall sense of humor is commendable.

The premise of Grave Danger is very straight-forward: four high school teenagers end up at uber-geek Zack's house one night for differing reasons, but they soon find that their neighborhood has been completly overrun by the shambling hordes of the undead. What starts as a desperate trek to the police station turns into a frenzied investigation as to why Suburbia has become a breeding ground for zombies and the like. That's really all there is to it and you're promptly thrust into the action to repel the moaning masses.

PS3 - BCUS98245 [Little Big Planet 2]

Little Big Planet 2™

Let's get it out of the way early -- LittleBigPlanet 2 is awesome. The levels are clever, a bunch of new additions change platforming for the better, and the community tools are smarter than ever. This game is a fantastic way to kick off a 2011 packed with PlayStation 3 exclusives. Still, the game has some nagging issues that won't be unfamiliar to folks who rocked the first game. Does it ruin the experience? Not at all.

LittleBigPlanet 2 packs 30 story levels that tell the tale of the Negativitron, a horrible beast that has invaded Craftworld and is gobbling up all the cities on the planet. You're Sackboy, and you've got to travel to spots on the globe to run, jump, shoot, grab and fly on your way to saving the day. The story is cute like a children's storybook, but it's not all that engaging. Luckily, the levels are exciting and the gameplay's a blast. The majority of this plays out in the familiar LittleBigPlanet style, which is essentially 2D platforming similar to a Mario game. Sackboy starts on one end of the level and runs to the other side while jumping over obstacles and on top of enemies to make it to the goal. There are three planes for Sackboy to live on (background, middle and foreground) and you move him between them with your controller. All the while, you're nabbing point bubbles and hidden prizes on the screen. If you get lonely, you can team with up to three other Sackpeople either locally or online. Media Molecule has outdone itself on these story levels. Each world feels unique, and the platforming challenges get more intense as you go along -- one minute I was fighting a possessed cupcake and the next I was using deadly fireflies to navigate my way through a pitch black room full of spots to die in. As great as those levels are with their colorful motifs and truly rocking tunes, the stuff that I really dug had nothing to do with platforming.

Little Big Planet™

The answer is that it's absolutely fantastic, an instant classic that actually turned out to be better than my expectations. The community and creation stuff was bound to be reason enough to own the game, but the included content put together by Media Molecule is so good that even if the level building tools weren't in the picture, this would still be a must-have experience.

That's not to say that it's without faults. There are a handful of things that can be cleaned up or fixed by way of patches that are a little annoying at the moment (which I'll come back to in a bit), but they barely mar the surface of an overall game that is nothing short of brilliant in terms of both its design and implementation.
When you first start up the game, your only option will be to hit up the main Story mode. The first three levels (which are the same that were featured in the beta, if you played that) serve as good tutorials for how to play the game. In terms of mechanics, this is about as pure and basic a control setup as you can get. The X button jumps, R1 grabs objects, and that's about it. If you grab a jetpack, you can either shake the controller or tap one of the face buttons to remove it, but that ends your control mechanics (outside of the editor, of course).

While that sounds simple, and it is, it's the level design that makes the whole Story progression the fantastic experience that it is. The first set of levels is fairly easy and will look familiar to anyone who's followed the game at all. The cool thing though is that every other level in the game (of which there are more than 20 "main" levels) is completely unique. Each themed area has three main stages, and while those generally use a lot of the same art assets and look very similar, what you're doing there in each individual area is very different. The jungle areas have you swinging from monkeys, climbing giraffes and riding on buffaloes. The Metropolis stages have you navigate sewers, hop between subway cars and drag race. There's a wild west set of levels that rely on plenty of explosives and mine cart rides, and every other section is just as varied (if not more so) than these.

Really, Media Molecule has done an amazing job of giving you something cool to do in one level, then switching it up and giving you something completely different for the next without ever really repeating ideas throughout the entire game. It's all platforming, sure, but the variance within that frame does nothing short of pushing the limits of the genre.
